"Don't come in late," his older brother, Sion, told him as Ryo was putting on his shoes in the hallway. "Mom and dad will be back by dinnertime and you're not supposed to go out."

"Don't worry, oni-chan," Ryo replied, getting up from the floor and checking that he was carrying his phone, wallet, keys and hand warmers in his various jacket pockets. "I'll only be with Saku-chan for a couple of hours and I'll be here before they get back," he promised. "Have fun with Yushi oni-san now that you'll have the house to yourselves for a few hours."

Ryo winked at his brother, causing him to turn red from head to toe in embarrassment, and left the flat before the older man was able to formulate an equally insinuating response about his relationship with Sakuya. If he dawdled any longer, he wouldn't make their date, and they were going to have very little time together because, in theory, Ryo was grounded from going out on Christmas days, even though all the boy had done was spend too many hours online in a game because, that way, he could go on little dates with Sakuya without being disturbed... however, that had caused him to fail a couple of exams, nothing too serious that Ryo couldn't fix before the end of the school year, but his parents had decided it was best to punish him without a social life until he finished his exams and passed them all. Thank heavens he had a completely charming older brother who had hatched the best plan in the universe so that all the stars aligned and Ryo could get out of the house to spend a few hours with his boyfriend his first boyfriend Sakuya, on Christmas Eve while his parents had a romantic meal away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The plan worked out well for both of them, since that way, Sion also had the house to himself and his boyfriend Yushi, with no one to bother them, and he was doing a good deed for his little brother, who really didn't deserve the punishment.

Ryo arrived at the bus stop just as the bus he was supposed to take to go downtown, where he had arranged to meet Sakuya, was arriving, so he only had to run a few meters to avoid missing it and get on the bus, cramming in like a sardine in a can with the rest of the passengers. He tried to find a gap where he could grab onto one of the poles, since he still couldn't quite reach the top hitches, but it was impossible, so he had to settle for being a sardine between a couple of people, trying not to fall off every time the bus braked hard something that happened every few minutes. Ryo had left home on a tight schedule because his parents had taken longer than expected to leave, and he had warned Sakuya that he might be too late for his appointment, but he hadn't realised that everyone would be out of the house that day, and therefore there would be traffic jams at every corner due to the large number of cars and passers-by crowding the streets of this big city, So, every time the bus slowed down and stopped for a few minutes, Ryo could do nothing but pray that Sakuya wouldn't be on time for his appointment either so that he wouldn't be waiting for him in the cold of the street, because he was so canned on the bus, he couldn't even move to take his phone out of the pocket of his jacket and text the boy with an update on the time he expected to arrive.

Much later than expected, Ryo emerged into the cold of the street, having had to push and shove his way to the door of the bus, almost stumbling down the stairs to the pavement. It had been horribly hot in there between the heating and the human heat, but in the street the cold was criminal, so the boy put his hands in his pockets and ran so as not to lose his body heat, wanting to get to where he was meeting Sakuya as soon as possible. He hadn't been able to warn him that he was even later than he'd told him, so that was all he could do, run to get there. He had to weave through couples and couples walking through the streets of the city with parsimony, observing the scenery around them, the Christmas stalls, the food stalls, the lights that should not be long in coming on because it was starting to get dark, but after the effort, he found himself arriving at the square where he had arranged to meet his boyfriend. Ryo looked everywhere for the boy and took out his phone to see if he had left any message, but he had no notification from him, so he simply searched and searched all the corners of the square with his eyes, until he finally found Sakuya, sitting on a bench, with a striped hat of different colours on his head, waiting for him. A smile spread across Ryo's face when he found him, a smile that didn't leave his lips as he made his way over to him, nor when he arrived in front of the boy, standing right in front of him.

"Saku-chan," he called out, causing the boy to raise his head to look at him. A completely cute smile appeared on his face and Ryo felt like kissing him, but they hadn't gone to that level yet. "Sorry I'm so late, my parents weren't leaving and the traffic was awful, the bus was stopping every few minutes and..."

"It's OK, it's not your fault," Sakuya cut him off. "I know you've done everything possible and even the impossible to be able to spend some time with me, I didn't mind waiting a few more minutes for you to arrive."

Ryo had intended to continue apologising, but after the boy's words, he simply closed his mouth and nodded. He was kind of right about it not being his fault, but all the things that had gone against him, and he didn't want to upset Sakuya either. They had arranged to meet that day so they could spend their first Christmas together, as a couple, and Ryo shouldn't do anything else to spoil it. It was a miracle they could be together considering he couldn't leave the house because of his punishment, so now that they had the time to be together and enjoy themselves, that's what they would do.

"Do you want to go to the food stalls and get something warm?" was what he asked Sakuya instead. "I'm sure you're freezing, something warm will do you good."

Sakuya nodded, shaking his head vigorously and Ryo held out a hand to help him up from the bench. The boy took it and Ryo pulled him to his side. His hand was frozen, so instead of letting go, he slipped it with his own into the pocket of his jacket, which, thanks to one of the warmers he'd picked up before leaving the house, was still warm. Sakuya looked at him, somewhere between confused and amazed by that action, but he didn't pull away from him or make any attempt to remove his hand, so Ryo just smiled at him and they started walking through the crowd, looking for the stalls in the surrounding streets so they could warm up with a bite to eat while they hung out together, talking about everything and nothing at the same time as they walked.

Ryo was still amazed that their relationship had been able to blossom. He and Sakuya had been friends since they had started high school and had sat together in their first class. He'd always found the boy adorable and cute, but Ryo would never have thought that his feelings would mutate and that he would start to see Sakuya in a different way, taking a romantic interest in him, getting nervous when he got close to him because he was his friend, his best friend... but what he'd least thought was that Sakuya would feel the same way too and one day confesed to him, being braver and more determined than Ryo had ever been. It still seemed like a dream, something that wasn't real and would be over when he woke up, but for the moment he was content to enjoy his time with him, not thinking about anything else, just loving him and letting himself be love by him.

Spending as much time together as they did, being in the same class, going to and from school until their paths diverged in the middle, texting each other all the time about what was going on, playing online games together and even spending many weekends at each other's houses, it almost seemed impossible that they would have topics of conversation to exhaust, but they didn't, they could talk about anything and never run out of topics of conversation. However, they could also spend hours saying absolutely nothing to each other, being comfortable in their silence while doing anything, like doing their homework for class, reading the hundreds of manga that Sion had at home, or just listening to the music of the bands they each liked. It was still interesting and fun to be together, and spending Christmas Eve with each other was also very special for them, something that reaffirmed them as a couple, that made their relationship a little stronger, so Ryo had gone out of his way to make the date.

"That takoyaki looks really good," Sakuya commented, stopping at one of the stalls.

"Yes, it does," Ryo replied.

There was hardly a line there because it wasn't really a time to eat, it was well past lunchtime and it was still early for dinner, but they could use a snack since they weren't going to be able to eat dinner together, plus the takoyaki balls kept the heat in, so it would warm them up quickly. As they waited their turn, the boys talked about what they would order and when the woman running the stall finally served them, Ryo took it upon himself to order everything and pay although paying caused a bit of a scuffle with Sakuya until he convinced him that it was his way of making up for the fact that he would have had to wait for him for quite a while.

When they had the takoyaki to-go boxes in their hands, Ryo felt a little shiver at the warmth it gave off in contrast to his cold hands, but he just smiled and latched onto his boyfriend's arm, starting to walk back through the crowd. Eating and walking through the crowd proved to be a risky business, but with laughter and bites of the dumplings melting in their mouths and burning their tongues, the two managed until they reached the railing of an uncrowded bridge and were able to drop against it to finish their meal without incident or takoyakis on the ground. As they ate, night finally fell over the city and Christmas lights began to light up around them, as if by magic. Sakuya's eyes lit up at that moment as if they held a thousand star-filled galaxies in them and Ryo couldn't help but gawk at the boy beside him, only coming out of his reverie when the boy called out to him.

"Ryo-chan," he said, "I'm going to throw this away, I'll be right back."

The boy grabbed the little box from his hand, with not a single takoyaki ball left, and then ran off through the crowd of people strolling around the place to a nearby trash bin. Ryo followed him with his eyes, still a little dazed from earlier. There weren't many occasions where he was completely lost in Sakuya, but they were becoming more and more frequent and the boy didn't understand how every day he could be more in love and enthralled with Sakuya, because it seemed completely impossible... but it was, Ryo was more in love every day with this cute boy, who sometimes had the stupidest ideas in the universe and who made him feel like he was on a cloud next to him. Ryo had to snap out of his thoughts when Sakuya returned to his side, smiling in a way that made his heart go crazy pounding inside his chest.

"Shall we take pictures?" asked the boy, leaning over the railing of the bridge and sitting on it.

"Sure," said Ryo, starting to pull out his phone out of his pocket, "but be careful," he muttered afterwards, pointing to the railing.

"I know if I lose my balance, you'll be here to catch me," Sakuya replied, the smile never leaving his lips.

Ryo had to use all his willpower not to pull the boy down and kiss him right then and there. His heart was pounding inside his chest and how much he loved Sakuya had increased at least tenfold because of those words, because of that iron trust she had in him. Ryo would never let anything bad happen to him, he would stand in the middle of any danger and protect him from anything that wanted to harm him without a second thought.

"The lights are beautiful this year," Sakuya murmured, looking at the lights around them again, but Ryo couldn't take his eyes off him.

"Yes..." he replied, distracted.

"You're not looking at the lights," the boy laughed, bringing his hands to Ryo's head to turn it towards them. "Now you're looking at them."

Ryo stared for just a few seconds at the Christmas lights around them, shining brightly, hanging from the wires they had placed between the floors, above the streets, surrounding the trees, lampposts and even the traffic signs, turning to Sakuya immediately after because the boy, still laughing, happy, it was truly the best view he could have at that moment, the most precious and Ryo couldn't help but put into words and say out loud his thoughts about Sakuya.

"You're more pretty than all these lights, Saku-chan."

Sakuya lit up completely. A smile still graced his lips, but moreover, red rose to his cheeks and ears, standing out against his white skin. The boy said nothing. He didn't seem capable of it at the moment, but the look he gave Ryo of absolute affection caused Ryo to simply decide that this must be the moment, the precise moment when their relationship could take another step forward, and that's what he did. He positioned himself between Sakuya's legs to press himself as close to him as he could, and then brought one of his hands to his face to tilt the boy down as he stood on his tiptoes, until their lips brushed in a short, chaste kiss, flavoured with the sauce of the takoyaki they had eaten moments before. When Ryo pulled away from the boy, the red in his face had intensified, but Sakuya's smile was much, much wider in that moment than before.

"I like you a lot, Saku-chan," Ryo murmured.

"I like you a lot too," Sakuya replied.

Ryo noticed the colour rising in his cheeks too and decided to hide it, turning between his legs to really look at the lights that time, feeling Sakuya's arms wrap around his neck from behind, leaning over him and resting his chin on his head, totally relaxed against him, causing Ryo to have the feeling that time around him stopped and stretched out indefinitely. Even though it was getting colder and colder, Ryo felt everything inside him feel warm and he wouldn't have minded staying there for the rest of his life, like this. However, the time they could be together was running out and the boy had to get home before his parents did or his punishment for skipping his initial punishment would be terrible, so he could only stretch out that moment, enjoying it, for a few more minutes until his departure was completely unavoidable.

On the way home, Ryo didn't let go of Sakuya's hand until Sakuya got on the bus that would take him home, and even then, as he himself walked back to his own house, he could still feel the warmth and weight of it, his fingers entwined with his own, enveloping his hand completely, so when he arrived home barely a quarter of an hour before his parents Ryo did so with a smile on his face that he knew wouldn't leave him for the rest of his holiday. (Only when he threw himself on the bed to sleep, hours later, Ryo remembered that they never got to take pictures that day and couldn't help but laugh at himself and Sakuya for forgetting about it).
